KAKTOVIK WATER RESPONSE
Incident Overview
Current information about the Kaktovik water incident, testing results, and the ongoing response.
What Happened
According to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, on August 16 a water plant operator used a mislabeled chemical container while preparing a disinfectant solution. The South Tank was isolated and taken offline following the incident. The North Tank is believed to have been unaffected.
What Testing Found
Laboratory results received September 5 detected ethylene glycol at 26 mg/L in the distribution system, substantially higher than initially estimated. Based on those results, the Borough issued the Do Not Drink order. DEC and the Alaska Department of Health advised that the detected concentration is not a known acute health risk for adults, but it exceeds drinking water health guidance.
Why the Guidance Changed
Earlier information indicated that the amount of ethylene glycol potentially introduced into the system was very small, and initial guidance reflected the information available at that time. The September 5 laboratory results showed a higher concentration than originally estimated, prompting the updated Do Not Drink guidance.
Ongoing Testing & Response
On September 7, additional samples were collected from the North Tank, South Tank and both distribution loops and sent for glycol analysis. The Do Not Drink order remains in effect while those results are pending and the investigation continues. The Borough is working with DEC, the Alaska Department of Health and UIC on corrective actions.
